Safety Pharmacology

Safety Pharmacology studies are designed to investigate adverse effects of test compounds on vital function in mammalian species. Gene Logic provides experience in primary evaluations, including cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous system assessment, as well as supplemental evaluations of renal/urinary function, gastrointestinal function, and immune function.

Based on your input, Gene Logic designs Safety Pharmacology studies to determine the response of potential adverse effects of your test compound. The following tests are available in-house or through our network of external providers:

Core Battery Tests:

Central Nervous System:
  • Locomotor activity
  • Functional observation battery (Modified Irwin Screen)
  • Coordination, sensory/motor responses
  • Rotorod
Cardiovascular System - Telemetry
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Electrocardiogram (QT/QTc)
  • In vitro Electrophysiology (Purkinje fibers, hERG)
Respiratory System:
  • Respiratory rate
  • Capnography (SpO2, ETCO2)

Supplemental Battery Tests:

Central Nervous System:
  • Analgesia test (Tail Flick)
  • Pro-convulsant activity
  • Barbiturate-induced sleeping time
  • Learning and memory
  • Startle response

Renal/Urinary System:

Urinalysis to include:
  • Volume
  • Specific gravity
  • Osmolarity
  • pH
  • Fluid/electrolyte balance
  • Proteins
  • Cytology

Gastrointestinal System - Transit time
